Boom Festival Newsletter - Dezembro 2007 If you haven’t already guessed, this is the last month of the 10th anniversary of Boom Festival. 10 years is a landmark achievement consisting of millions of experiences, thousands of memories and emotions, tons and tons of art exposure, and uncountable hours of fun. And ultimately art has been the key word to making Boom this far. In remembering the last 10 years what comes to mind are the faces of the people that have been participating in Boom – freedom-orientated minds from all over the world. More inspiration to come, straight ahead to 2008! Recycling Oil: The New Project of Boom 2008"Your Oil Is Music" is a pioneer project held by the Boom Festival in cooperation with the City Council of Idanha-a-Nova. We've started collecting the vegetable used oil that is being used in the cities and villages around Boom venue. We’ll recycle the oil in about 6,000 houses covering a population of 12,000 people. The oil will fuel the generators of Boom, thus reducing the carbon emission to the atmosphere. Additionally we’re avoiding the used oil to be thrown away - one liter of oil pollutes one million liters of water. New Year, New Website, New Creative PlatformsOn the 1st of January the new version of Boom Festival website will be launched. There’s a whole new way of Boom universes to reveal and a platform for expressing updates, new art and cutting-edge paradigms. One of the novelties is Boom Web TV, a media that will be broadcasting contents unlocked under corporate and mainstream control. It will be a free zone for experimenting, discussing, promoting and enabling in-depth perspectives towards the world. Ticket Sale Countdown! The first phase of Boom ticket sale starts on the 8th January to February 20th. Prices will be €95, quite cheaper comparing to the price that will be available at the gates (€160). This phase of the Boom tickets are available exclusively in the Boom website ( www.boomfestival.org) as an electronic ticket service. Please check all prices and where to purchase tickets in www.boomfestival.org after 8th January. Get The Boom BusFrom the 8th January onward you'll be able to get a Boom Bus seat. This charter bus service takes the Boom goers from the main airports around Boom straight to the Boom venue. No queues, no stress, just fun and comfort. The Boom Bus is also a way for you to keep cars away from the festival area. Cars away from the Boom mean less carbon emissions and less pollution for the lake of Idanha-a-Nova. Artists To Design Boom T-ShirtsEvery year Boom has invited different graphic designers to design the print of its t-shirts. For the first time Boom is opening up to everyone the possibility to print their art. Our aim is to reinforce the creative networks that have been developing across Boom. If you want to be a part of it and be the Boom t-shirts official designer contact: tshirt_contest@boomfestival.org. We impose no boundaries for creation! To find out more check www.boomfestival.org.

Boom Festival Newsletter - Fevereiro 2008 Mutation! We love it. Through the western calendar we’re already in February, but a new change lies ahead. The Chinese year 4706 begins on February 7th, 2008 and we’re entering the year of the Rat, which is also known by its former name of Wu Zi. Western, Chinese, Tibetan, Mayan, well, each culture has its own connection with the stars through a calendar. We look at each one of them carefully as it brings you to a place you can’t quantify, to ubiquitous latitudes within the collective imaginary. In order to connect us with the global imaginary, Boom released a book and co-produced a documentary. And for a clear mark in your calendars, be it western or oriental or even extraterrestrial, we announce a date for line-ups to be online. Hope you enjoy travelling through this month’s newsletter. “Boom Book”: A Pioneer EditionThe “Boom Book” was a project carried out during 2007 as a commemoration of Boom’s 10th anniversary. The goal was is to independently release a book about Boom but also to highlight its main contribution to today’s world – as leader in incorporating novel approaches to entertainment and providing experiences lived through a festival which can pioneer new perceptions and visions, enhancing all of us and our relationship with the world we live in. This book is a collaborative project put together by anthropologists, journalists, designers, illustrators, poets, musicologists, and photographers to capture the essence of the Boom Festival. The Boom Book includes essays, interviews, visionary art by Alex Grey, Robert Venosa or Android, and innovative texts about psy-trance. It is a cultural record of striking importance, capturing the beauty of Boom and also the role of subcultures in a modern world. Click here to read more... All Line-Ups Released in JulyWe all know that Boom is not just about music neither about purely a dance floor experience. However, we do know how important that is for a good festival. Music is a delicate thing. That’s why we don’t like to throw it away to the air like popcorn. We spend hundreds of hours with it: listen to music at the office, purchasing all types of sounds, and carrying it in our portable devices. Our main concern music-wise is to present novelty and fantasy. Since we like to dig deep in a quest for music, and listen carefully to the hundreds of demos we get, we like to wait for the latest music released in the summer season before Boom so that we can present fresh music to the participants. In this way we assure you: July will be the date for us to announce all Boom line-ups together! Boom Ambassadors, A Closer ConnectionThe Boom Ambassador is an individual, shop or organization that represents the Boom Festival. It’s a network that spreads around the spread all over the world and embodies a close and friendly connection between Boom and its participants. For this year’s edition we have 100 Boom Ambassadors in 45 countries, and the list is continuously evolving. Through a Boom ambassador you can purchase tickets and get the latest info regarding Boom and purchase tickets from March 7th onwards. Check the full list of Boom Ambassadors here. “We Are One”, The Boom DVD Is Released“We Are One” is a documentary about the Boom Festival which portrays the key concepts and underlying spirit that have been hardwired into Boom. The nature, ecology, party, joyful spirit, art, independent culture and creative expression have all redrawn the map of human gatherings making Boom an unique event in the world. “We Are One” tracks these elements across a wide range of music, artworks and delicate footage. This documentary is directed by Sebastian Rost and produced by both Psynema and Boom. For more information on “We Are One”, click here. Tickets And Shops: The Latest NewsWe’re approaching the end of the first phase of the ticket sales. On February the 21st the prices will rise, so we advise everybody to purchase their Boom ticket as soon as possible. On a different level, we are now approaching the phase for processing the flea market requests. We all love the kazbah frenzy that the shops and stalls bring to Boom. If you are interested in applying for a space in the flea market please fill in the application form by clicking here.

Boom Festival Newsletter - Março 2008 Robots - an icon for all of us humans immersed in the digital world. The robot was born in Marxist theory. Czech playwright Karel Capek coined the word in its 1921 play “Rossums Universal Robots”. Capek took ‘robot’ from the Czech ‘forced labour’. On electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk’s theme “We Are The Robots”, they sing “Ja tvoi sluga” (“I’m your slave”) and “Ja tvoi Rabotnik (“I’m your worker”). There’s something cool on robots on sci-fi movies, but, on the opposite, this simple word is being associated with the mechanical levels of mankind. Most of the present paradigms are based on the assumption of normalized traits of human beings, lead by robotic and repetitive behaviors. In its 11 years of existence, Boom is a place for freedom. A place where all can experience a break away from the impetus of the robotic-based perspective of life. A perspective imposed by mainstream culture through the media and cultural dogmas. We don’t like manipulations. We are up to rebooting the system now! Reboot Now: A Convergence For The AlternativesReboot Now is a gathering to celebrate the emergence of new paradigms, where you can become a catalyst for change by the unlearning of old patterns. From the 2nd to the 9th of August, happening on the beautiful shores of Idanha-a-Nova, in Portugal, Reboot Now will celebrate ecologically-sustainable and socially-just ways of organizing people-nature relationships. Reboot Now, produced by Boom Festival Team in conjunction with several partner orgs, will take us into the depth of matters, by inviting you to contribute into the creation of preferred sustainable futures. Converging at Reboot Now are NGOs, lecturers, thinkers, indie media, scientists, ecologists, philosophers and a wide variety of activists from all over the world. A week later (11 - 18 August) the Boom Festival will take place at the same site and filled with the energies of Reboot Now. More information: www.rebootnow.org. Education For Sustainability: A New Boom PathFor several editions Boom is developing new ways of sustainable entertainment. Projects like dry toilets, recycling, water treatment, eco-teams, bio-construction to name just a few, are part of a philosophy that is using entertainment as a way to provide new solutions to people. Now we are taking a step forward! Boom teamed up with IPEC Ecocenter ( www.ecocentro.org) to start courses on the multi aspects of sustainability. You can learn new models of sustainable living from May 2008 onwards. If you want to sustainably generate your future check here. BooMovies: Set Free Your Creative TalentsBoom had 20 000 humans from 80 different countries in 2006. In the past 60 days the Boom website has been visited by people from 148 countries. Among this global network there is a huge contingent of people connected with cinema, documentaries, animation, and other media platforms! In order to channel such creative waves, we are launching a contest. The BooMovies is a project that aims to receive proposals from people willing to make movies about Boom. If you are having a creative urge and are eager to unleash your flair, then get in touch. The BooMovies is devoted to documentaries, shorts and animations. The outcomes will part of a post-Boom 2008 release containing the best movies. The deadline for receiving the proposals is June 15th. Be a part of the Boom, send your ideas to: boomovies@boomfestival.org. Paradigms Film FestivalThe Boom Festival proudly announces the first edition of the Paradigms Film Festival. Hosted in the Liminal Village, Paradigms Film Festival will focus on cinema at the edge. Broadly exploring themes of transformation, globalization, cultural and planetary evolution, environmental awareness and sustainable futures, Paradigms aims to open eyes. Showing full length movies, documentaries, shorts, web flicks, trailers and other audio/visual presentations, the program will offer a metamedia environment lasting deep into the night. We are currently accepting submissions for films and other multimedia projects. If you're actively involved in a production or feel there is a film that should be a part of Paradigms, we invite you to make a submission. Contact naasko@boomfestival.org with your input or for more information on how to get involved. Boom´s Breathtaking Landscape Has HistoryBoom is located in a Unesco Geopark, where Mother Earth and Cosmos have carefully carved the land for more than 600 million years. A Geopark is a protected region containing a number of geological heritage sites of particular importance, rarity or aesthetic appeal. These Earth heritage sites are part of an integrated concept of protection, education and sustainable development powered by UNESCO’s Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences. Boom is situated in Geopark Naturtejo, one of 30 exquisite European geoparks from the UNESCO program. This is a unique and intact landscape, characterized by wide plains where quartzite ridges rise, creating powerful natural ramparts carved by the waters of torrential rivers and resulting in a massive scenic gorge. Geopark Naturtejo has wonderful geomorphologic, geological, palaeontological heritages. Click here to read more or visit Naturtejo Geopark webpage.

RebootNow Newsletter - April 2008 Paradigms are changing. In these times of change and dislocation, of dire need and endless urgency, we know that ours is not to search “what are we willing to give up?” but to ask, “what do we cherish and not want to lose?” There is a conceptual void to be filled in urgently with a conscious mentality. Yet there is also a growing understanding that serious measures must be taken by each one of us in order to celebrate new paradigms. As Walter Pater, the Victorian critic said “We are here to catch light and heat from each other’s thoughts”. That’s the leit motiv of Reboot Now. Our thinking will guide our actions; our actions will shape the world we live in. We can be catalysts for that change! Reboot Now, Celebrating New ParadigmsThe Reboot Now Convergence will take place from the 2nd to the 9th of August and will be held by the shores of the Idanha-a-Nova lake in Portugal. This gathering is about celebrating new paradigms, joining together activists, speakers and organizations in a quest towards sustainable futures. There will be workshops and presentations spanning domains such as permaculture, independent media, new green technologies, bio-architecture, holistic health etc. Check the programme and line-ups at www.rebootnow.org and ‘reboot’ your thinking systems. A Worldwide ConceptReboot Now is the catching, the connecting, of the light and heat of our thoughts. To extend and expand those connections, to bring the heat to more people, Reboot Now Convergence will travel to other continents. For its first year, Reboot Now starts its journey in Europe. In 2009 Reboot Now will travel to South America, more precisely Brazil, and in 2010 Reboot Now might connect with the Asian paradigms. The converging of new paradigms will support the local network of activists with a worldwide-oriented awareness by cross-pollinating alternative paradigms. Workshop On Non-Violence AlternativesSabine Leichtenfels is a non-violence activist and was nominated one of the "1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005". With a background in theology and philosophy she co-founded an interdisciplinary research community for a non-violent social alternative in 1978, and co-founded the peace research center Tamera in Portugal in 1995. Sabine will present a workshop under the theme of “Political response, new political actions (Global Campus), and ‘social sustainability’". For more info click here: www.rebootnow.org/speakers/sabine.shtmlMiguel Yasuyuki Hirota Towards The Economic DemocratizationEconomic growth is one of the central figures in a modern world. There are affordable new solutions that can prevent global warming and social asymmetries while fostering growth. Miguel Yasuyuki Hirota will present his perspectives for a new economic paradigm. Born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1976. He obtained his Master’s degree at the Department of Advanced and International Studies Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, University of Tokyo and is now a Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Asia and Pacific Studies, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific Univ., Beppu, Japan. Since 1999 he has been studying and promoting complementary currency systems all over the world (Europe, United States, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand) as a leverage to achieving a sustainable economy, as he is convinced that the current monetary system is not appropriate for such goals. He has already published two books in Japanese on this topic additionally to other articles in English and French. He is fluent in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, speaks some German, Italian and Korean, and has recently been travelling around as much as possible to reinforce this movement all over the world. Boom Festival Newsletter - Abril 2008 The DIY mentality is still much in evidence across the whole arts, education and culture projects at Boom 2008. We’re sure that some of the most exciting breakthroughs of this Boom will come from the artists that are crosspollinating their aesthetics with other art forms – be it in paint, installations, music, performances or theatre. But there’s a whole army of poets, activists, enthusiasts, to name just a few, following in close pursuit. So, look out for the novelties, watch out for the genuine arts and free expressions. You have all five senses for this purpose! We know you’re curious about what will happen at Boom so we start now to announce some of our invitees for Boom 2008. A New Challenge: Education At BoomPermaculture is a major inspiration for the design of Boom 2008. From May 31st until the end of July experts on Permaculture and sustainable living will be developing credited courses near the lake of Idanha-a-Nova (the Boom venue): > Urban Edible Gardens and Soil Ecology (31st May to 2nd June) > Permaculture (7th - 29th June) > Sustainable Green Construction (9th - 26th June) > Water In The Environment (5th - 9th of July) > DIY Urban to Rural (19th - 20th July) All courses are certified by IPEC Ecocenter. For almost two months, you can be learning environmentally friendly techniques, chatting about nature, and experiencing new models of living, while getting a rare glimpse into sustainability in Unesco's Geopark surroundings. More info here. Public Art In Boom: From Videoart To 3D And GraffitiFrom paint to installations, land art or videoart, graffiti and stencil there’s a wide range of artists and art domains in Boom. Some of the decoration artists with works in progress are Sola, Flowers of Life and Cosmic Walkers. Public art in Boom is enhanced by the magical installations and 3D imagery by projects such as Kaleidoscopik Creature or Sagaz Corp. Visual Farm and Laborg are some of the artists that are presenting cutting-edge bio-electronic imagery. Boom is also showcasing new levels of graffiti and street art: there’s a transatlantic dialogue being developed in Idanha-a-Nova between Ram and High Raff. Music: Some Delicatessen Already ConfirmedGocoo are twelve Taiko drummers from Tokyo (Japan) who capture their audience with original grooves woven with Japanese drums, Taikos. They are presenting two shows: one in the Dance Floor, and on the following day the Sacred Fire area is hosting the neo-tribal music journey from the Japanese musical heritage to modern music lovers. On the other hand Groovy Beach will feature funk, dub and reggae in the afternoon, progressing into dubstep and breaks and late at night will turn into minimal, neo-trance or deep techno. It is a place for crosspollinating some of the newest and most genuine approaches in modern electronic music. The German duo Extrawelt is performing in the Groovy Beach alongside other cutting-edge acts such as Exercise One, Paul Ritch. Moreover in the Groovy Beach we’re preparing the biggest gathering of dubstep and 2 step ever developed in Iberian Peninsula within a festival.
